Constipation

Basics

Constipation is defined as having fewer than three bowel movements per week. When bowel movements do occur, they are often difficult and small in size. Contributing factors to constipation may include a poor diet—particularly a lack of fiber—inactivity, dehydration, certain medications, and various other factors.

Diagnostic Patterns

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the treatment of constipation focuses on identifying the appropriate diagnostic pattern for the individual rather than addressing the general condition. Common patterns associated with constipation include Kidney Yin Deficiency and Spleen Blood Deficiency.

A systematic review assessing the efficacy of TCM in managing constipation included three randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on acupuncture. These studies compared acupuncture treatment with patients receiving lactulose or Folium Sennae, showing statistically significant benefits for acupuncture.
