Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by widespread pain and tenderness in muscles throughout the body, often accompanied by fatigue. Other common symptoms include difficulty sleeping, painful menstrual periods, irritable bowel syndrome, memory issues, and numbness in the extremities. While the exact cause of fibromyalgia remains unknown, it has been associated with traumatic emotional or physical events, illnesses, or repetitive injuries. The condition predominantly affects women, with 80 to 90 percent of those diagnosed being female. Individuals with certain medical conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or spinal arthritis, are at an increased risk of developing fibromyalgia. Commonly used formulas for treatment include Juan Bi Wan, Ren Shen Yang Rong Wan, Shen Tong Zhu Yu Wan, and Xiao Chai Hu Tang Wan.
Acupuncture has shown superiority over standard care in alleviating pain and stiffness. However, it demonstrates significant differences in reducing pain, fatigue, or enhancing sleep and overall well-being. Additionally, electro-acupuncture (EA) is likely more effective than manual acupuncture in reducing pain and stiffness, and in improving global well-being, sleep, and fatigue (Deare 2013 – Cochrane SR of 9 RCTs).
