A migraine headache is characterized by intense, throbbing pain typically located on one side of the head, often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. Triggers for migraines can include sudden exposure to light, stress, anxiety, lack of food or sleep, and hormonal changes. A migraine attack can last from 1 to 4 days and is sometimes preceded by warning signs known as an aura, which may include visual disturbances, tingling sensations, impaired speech, or muscle weakness. Acupuncture has been found to be at least as effective as conventional preventive medications for migraines, offering a safe, long-lasting, and cost-effective treatment option (Witt et al. 2008; Da Silva 2015 – Narrative review of large, high-quality RCTs). Studies indicate that acupuncture reduces migraine frequency and is superior with effectiveness comparable to prophylactic drugs. Notably, a subgroup analysis revealed a larger effect size with 16 or more treatments compared to 12 or fewer (Z = 4.06 vs. Z = 2.32), indicating quality evidence (Linde 2016 – Cochrane SR of 22 RCTs of at least 8 weeks duration). Additionally, acupuncture demonstrated superior effectiveness and reduced the risk of recurrence (Yang 2016 – SR of 10 RCTs).
