Perimenopausal Insomnia

Introduction

Sleep disturbances are a common concern for many women during the peri-menopausal and postmenopausal phases, often exacerbated by hormonal fluctuations. These disturbances can significantly impact overall well-being, quality of life, and daily functioning. In recent years, acupuncture has emerged as a complementary therapy that may help alleviate sleep-related issues during this transitional period. The following research explores the efficacy of acupuncture in reducing sleep disturbances and improving sleep quality among women experiencing menopause-related changes.

Acupuncture has been associated with a significant reduction in sleep disturbances, likely linked to alterations in serum estradiol, FSH, and LH levels. It is recommended as an adjunctive therapy to enhance sleep quality in peri-menopausal and postmenopausal women (Chiu 2016 – systematic review of 34 studies). Additionally, evidence suggests improved sleep quality, findings from a systematic review of 7 randomized controlled trials indicate high-quality evidence, with 4 studies classified as high quality and no studies exhibiting a high risk of bias (Bezarra 2015).
