Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is the most prevalent endocrine disorder among women. It is characterized by hyperandrogenism, ovulatory dysfunction, and obesity, leading to an increased risk of metabolic issues such as hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance. These conditions can subsequently elevate the risk for type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular complications, and mental health problems later in life. Women with PCOS often require long-term treatment to manage their symptoms effectively. Common clinical manifestations include oligoamenorrhea (irregular or very light menstruation), infertility, acne, male-pattern baldness, and hirsutism (excessive hair growth). Conventional treatments for PCOS typically involve prescription medications, surgical interventions, and lifestyle modifications aimed at symptom management.
Acupuncture is thought to stimulate the nervous system and promote the release of neurochemical messenger molecules, leading to biochemical changes that enhance the body's homeostatic mechanisms. This process can contribute to improved physical and emotional well-being.
Studies suggest that acupuncture may alleviate PCOS symptoms by regulating follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and androgens, as well as modulating the sympathetic nervous system and enhancing blood flow to the ovaries. It may also help downregulate serum testosterone and estradiol levels while improving insulin sensitivity and reducing blood glucose and insulin levels. Ren et al. (2014) conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of 31 studies, suggesting that acupuncture is effective. Jo et al. (2017) performed a systematic review and meta-analysis, indicating that acupuncture is likely to improve ovulation and menstruation rates compared to no acupuncture. They reported statistically significant pooled benefits of acupuncture as an adjunct to medication in improving LH, the LH/FSH ratio, testosterone levels, fasting insulin levels, and pregnancy rates.
