Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in women, commonly associated with hyper-androgenism, ovulatory dysfunction, and obesity. Women with PCOS are at an increased risk for metabolic disturbances, such as hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance, which can lead to type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and a greater likelihood of cardiovascular issues and mental health concerns later in life. The condition is characterized by symptoms such as infrequent or light menstruation (oligo-amenorrhoea), infertility, acne, male-pattern baldness, and hirsutism (excessive hair growth). Current conventional treatments include prescription medications, surgery, and lifestyle changes aimed at managing symptoms.
Acupuncture is believed to stimulate the nervous system and trigger the release of neurochemical messengers. These biochemical changes help regulate the body's homeostasis, promoting both physical and emotional well-being. Research suggests acupuncture may aid in the management of PCOS by regulating hormones such as follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and androgens. It also helps modulate sympathetic nervous system activity, improves ovarian blood flow, reduces testosterone and estradiol levels, and enhances insulin sensitivity, lowering blood glucose and insulin levels.
Ren 2014 (SR & MA of 31 studies): Acupuncture is effective (Lim 2016 Cochrane SR of 5 RCTs). Jo et al. 2017 (SR & MA): Acupuncture was found to improve ovulation and menstruation rates more effectively than no acupuncture. Statistically significant benefits were observed when used as an adjunct to medication, with improvements in LH, LH/FSH ratio, testosterone, fasting insulin, and pregnancy rates.
