Acupuncture is a time-tested therapy that promotes healing, reduces pain, and restores balance to the body. Experience its natural, holistic benefits for stress relief, better sleep, and enhanced overall well-being.
Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese practice dating back thousands of years and has found a place in modern medicine across the globe. The practice was introduced to New Zealand during the Gold Rush era and has since been integrated into various therapeutic regimes.
The technique involves the insertion of thin needles at specific body points. These points lie along meridians – pathways through which life energy, or qi, flows. Imbalances in qi are believed to lead to health issues, and acupuncture aims to correct these imbalances, thus alleviating symptoms ranging from pain and stress to insomnia.
Despite challenges in clinical studies due to its invasive nature, evidence supports acupuncture's effectiveness. The World Health Organization recognizes acupuncture as beneficial for 28 medical conditions and possibly more. Studies from institutions like the Technical University of Munich and The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center highlight its efficacy in treating conditions such as migraines and symptoms arising from cancer treatments.
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), health is a balance of yin and yang—opposing forces in the body. Qi, the vital life force, flows through pathways known as meridians. Acupuncture accesses these pathways at 361 points in the body to restore balance where there's illness.
Acupuncture treatments vary in frequency but typically involve several sessions spaced over weeks or months. In acute cases, treatments may be more frequent. A standard session lasts 40 to 60 minutes, where patients undergo a thorough assessment, followed by the insertion of sterile, single-use needles. Patients might experience a deep aching sensation when the needle reaches the target depth—a normal reaction known as Deqi.
